Tomorrow, Oct 29th, aka the 11th day of
the lunar month of Kartik, is the day on which Lord Vishnu awakens from
His four-month slumber under the earth, where He's been reclining on
the luxuriant coils of the great serpent Ananta (the Unending
One). Its also the day when I will be rising into the air, and
flying to NYC for about a month. I would just as well stay
here. The weather is beautiful, the power cuts are not very deep
yet, Im enjoying our new Chow, Zygmunt, and the
Maoists have just announced a new program of protests, parades, and
bandhas - a veritable red jatra! Protests, which hardy achieve
anything, but are only disruptive to the daily life of a faltering
country. The Roman emperors gave bread and circuses, our
revolutionary leaders give us very little bread, and lots of
demonstrations to blow off their cadres steam, and distract them from
the sell-out of the revolution, if it ever was to be...
I am going to the States
to use up my bonus miles on Qatar before they expire, to get a new
laptop - my Mac is out of whack - and to vote in the elections, I
guess. Anyway, Lord Vishnu is rising, let's hope that things
improve now under His watchful and benevolent eye, and that a spirit of
cooperation and cohesion in the society prevails.
Devotees of Vishnu have
been fasting and visiting Vishnu and Goddess temples for several
days already in anticipation of the long-awaited awakening of Lord
Vishnu.

On the eleventh
day of the bright half of the lunar month, the Lord finally rises in
all His splendor

Worship is
especially intense at Budhanilakantha, and Balaju, where there are
images of Vishnu slumbering in water.

The cycle of celebrating will
continue unabated until the full moon.
Rejoice! Vishnu is
afoot...
